On February 2, 2007 a series of tornadoes cut a swath of destruction across Sumter, Lake, Volusia and Polk counties. In Lake Mack, near the eastern edge of Lake County, thirteen people were confirmed dead by the end of the day. Eight people in Lady Lake lost their lives as a result of the tornadoes. The storms were the second-deadliest tornado event in state history. In 1998 five tornadoes tore into Orange and Osceola counties leaving more than 40 people dead. National Weather Service officials later rated the Lake and Sumter County tornadoes as EF3's on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with winds between 136 and 165 miles an hour. Over forty miles of destruction left over 200 million dollars in damage.
